How Much Do You Know About our Educational System?Pastor's Monthly Address - May, 2012 "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6, ESV) May and June are months when graduations are most frequently celebrated. Therefore, this time of the year is an appropriate time to talk about education. And throughout history, Lutherans have placed a great emphasis on education - especially the teaching of Scripture and the Small Catechism.
And on the Eighth Day He Rose Again?Pastor's Monthly Address - April, 2012 "So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from His." (Hebrews 4:9-10, ESV) More than once throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus predicted that: "The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day" (Matthew 17:22-23, ESV). And the events of Holy Week proved Jesus' prediction to be true. For He suffered and died. And "He was raised on the third day" (1 Corinthians 15:4, ESV) - which was "the first day of the week" (Matthew 28:1, ESV).
Who is St. Patrick?Pastor's Monthly Address - March, 2012 "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation." (Mark 16:15, ESV) In the above verse, Jesus tells us what He wants us to do. These words point to our mission as a church. This month most Americans will draw to remembrance a missionary who went beyond his homeland with the Gospel. His name is St. Patrick. But who exactly is he? Most Americans recognize the name because in our culture we celebrate a day (March 17th) called St. Patrick's Day.
Essential Ingredients of a Good HymnPastor's Monthly Address - February, 2012 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord." (Colossians 3:16, NKJV) What makes for a good hymn? This is a question that may evoke different responses. What does God's Word say? Well, in Colossians 3:16 the "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs" that the Apostle Paul is referring to have "the word of Christ" as their basis. In fact, St. Paul says that we are to "[teach] and [admonish] one another" with "the word of Christ" through "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs."
